History of the Scrimshaw Steinway Piano
This rare one-hundred year old Steinway is a historic treasure the Desmond Hotel is proud to share with its guests. The finish of this uniquely decorated piano features a Renaissance scene and ornamental art painted by a European artistan.
This one-of-a-kind piano is one of only two known remaining pianos of the fourteen of its kind made by Steinway. The other piano is at the estate of Harry S. Truman.
Purchased at the turn of the 20th century by world-renowned architect Stanford White, this piano was a gift for notorius actress Evelyn Nesbitt, known as the girl on the red velvet swing at Madison Square Garden...in the day. Ms. Nesbitt was the biographical inspiration for the movie "Ragtime". Stanford White is remembered as the architect of Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Purchased by John Desmond some time ago at an auction, the piano holds great historic and aesthetic value and has become a regular part of the fine-dining experience at the Scrimshaw Restaurant of the Desmond Hotel and Conference Center.
